Mission Statement
The mission of the Everglades Research and Education Center is to conduct research and extension programs in southern Florida that will explore and promote profitable and sustainable agricultural systems. These systems should conserve and protect our soil, water, and natural resources, and contribute to an improved quality of life for Florida citizens.
A Message from our Center Director
Dr. Samira Daroub
It has been an exciting, impactful first half of 2024 here at EREC. We hope our newsletter will give you a flavor of the accomplishments of our faculty, staff, and students. Our relationship and reach to our local south Florida community and beyond is highlighted with the many extension activities we host. Our graduate students conduct top notch research, participating in many local and national meetings and winning awards.
We have been busy recruiting for three faculty positions at the EREC. I am pleased to announce the hiring of Dr. Niguss Solomon Hailegnaw as an Assistant Professor in crop nutrient management with the Agronomy department. Dr. Hailegnaw is currently a research coordinator at the UF/IFAS Tropical Research and Education Center in Homestead working on nutrient management of snap bean production and soil health. Dr. Hailegnaw replaces the position left vacant by Dr. Mabry McCray who retired at the end of 2023 after 18 years at EREC. Dr. Hailegnaw will start January 1, 2025, and will focus on nutrient management of row crops including sweet corn and sugar cane. He will also be serving as the Director of the Everglades Soil Testing Lab. We look forward to announcing the rest of the faculty hires in the next few months.
Congratulations to Drs. Beuzelin, Sandoya and Odero. Effective July 1, 2024, Dr. Julien Beuzelin and Dr. German Sandoya are granted tenure and promoted to Associate Professor. Dr. Calvin Odero was promoted to Professor. We are all proud of their accomplishments!
Hope you enjoy reading about our news at the EREC!
