Leaves are alternate, clover-like with 3 heart-shaped leaflets, green or purplish green, long petiole, smooth on the surfaces, with a fringe of hairs on the margins.

Stem is prostrate to erect, green to purple, hairy, and 1 to 20 inches tall.
Flowers are bright yellow, in clusters that arise from long stalks at the leaf axils. Seeds are brown to maroon, oval, in an elongated capsule that springs open.

Roots are fibrous from long white to pink rhizomes. It roots around stems.
Propagation is primarily by seed, but plants can also spread by rhizomes.
