Erect annual or short-lived perennial woody plant with a large taproot, native of Cental America.
Leaves are alternate, lanceolate to ovate, margins are serrated, obscurely hairy, with a pair of small appendages at the base. Leaf stalks are short.
Stem is erect and branched, smooth to minutely hairy, 1 to 3 feet tall.
Flower is solitary, yellow on the leaf axils. Seeds are small, roughly triangular.
Root is a branching deep taproot.
Propagation is by seed.
