Leaves are alternate, simple, oval, toothed, hairy, up to 5 inches long and stalked.
Stem is erect, stiff, up to 4 feet tall, and hairy with rough trichomes.

Flowers are a large cluster, often pink purple, but can be white. Fruit is a tiny brown achene with a bristly pappus.

Roots are fibrous from a taproot.

Propagation is by seed.
