Specialty: Weed Science

The research focuses on development of effective integrated weed management programs for sugarcane and vegetables on both organic and mineral soils of south Florida. Research in bioenergy crops actively pursues management of potential escapes in sugarcane and vegetables. Also, weed management options for newly released bioenergy crop varieties are evaluated. Specific research areas include herbicide evaluation, weed biology and ecology, soil-herbicide interactions, weed-insect interactions, and interaction between pest management strategies. The extension focuses on providing current weed management recommendations to growers, extension county faculty, crop consultants, and industry representatives via extension publications (EDIS), field days, grower meetings, and web-based electronic formats

    • Herbicide evaluation (mesotrione + S-metolachlor + atrazine for preemergence and postemergence weed control in sugarcane; topramezone for postemergence weed control in sugarcane; terbacil for preemergence weed control in sugarcane; preemergence herbicide options for weed control in rice grown on organic soils; timing of asulam application for fall panicum control; alternative weed management options (imazethapyr, oxyfluorfen, pronamide, bensulide) for leafy greens).
    • Soil-herbicide interaction (dissipation of clomazone in organic and mineral soils; dissipation of pendimethalin in mineral soils; persistence of imazethapyr, oxyfluorfen, pronamide, and bensulide in organic soil).
    • Herbicide physiology (effect of temperature on efficacy, absorption, and translocation of asulam in fall panicum; absorption and translocation of topramezone in sugarcane; absorption and translocation of mesotrione in sugarcane; response of fall panicum biotypes to asulam; response of common lambsquarters biotypes to atrazine).
    • Weed biology and ecology (effect of water-table and fall panicum interference on early sugarcane growth and development; effect of pH, salinity, and water stress on fall panicum and ragweed parthenium growth and development).
    • Weed-insect interaction (weed species associated with sugarcane as potential hosts of corn wireworm).
    • Sugarcane ripeners (Moddus and ATRiun for sugarcane ripening).

Raphael Mereb Negrisoli is conducting his MS research in the Weed Science program under the supervision of Dr. Calvin Odero. His research is specifically involving evaluation of topramezone for postemergence weed control in sugar cane.
