Rusty flat sedge, Cyperus odoratus

 

Annual with solitary or bunched triangular stems, 6 inches to 2 feet tall.  Leaf blades 3/16 to 3/8 inch wide, the longest basal blades as tall as the seedhead.  Seedheads with 3 to 10 small, conspicuous leaves just below.  Seedheads are tan or brown, from 2 inches high and wide to 6 inches high and 10 inches wide.  The seed is brown, less than 1/16 inch long, and three angled.  Propagation is by seed.  Flat sedge grows most commonly in disturbed wet areas, such as ditches or wet cultivated fields.
