Prostrate to erect, green to purple stems, hairy, and 1 to 20 inches tall. Leaves are alternate, clover like with 3 heart-shaped leaflets, green or purplish green, long petiole, smooth on the surfaces, with a fringe of hairs on the margins. Flowers are bright yellow and in clusters that arise from long stalks at the leaf axils. Seeds are brown to maroon, oval, and in an elongated capsule that springs open. It has long white to pink rhizomes with fibrous roots. It also roots around stems. Propagation is primarily by seeds, but plants can spread by rhizomes.
