Slender vine, often trailing or climbing by coiled tendrils besides leaves, and grows 12 to 15 feet long. Leaves are alternate, simple, palmately 3 to 5 lobed, with a sand-papery texture and a few teeth on margins.  Flowers are solitary, yellow, and arise from a leaf axil. Fruits are cucumber-shaped, green and turn black with white seeds. The fruit develops on a long stalk.
