Aquatic or terrestrial plant with underground runners. Stems are red or pink, can be bigger than a thumb, hollow, simple or branched, and 1 to 3 feet long. Stems root at nodes. Leaves are opposite with smooth and continuous margin, and linear-elliptic or widest in middle. Roots are fibrous with a taproot. Flower is a solitary head, round, and white on a long stem. Propagation is by vegetative means only; flowers do not produce fruits or seeds.
