Woody and with herbaceous new growth, 8 to 12 feet tall. Leaves are opposite, on stalks, and twice divided with odd numbers of leaflets. Leaflets are elliptic and pointed at each end with teeth on margin. Flowers are white, creamy to gray. Fruits are round, fleshy, blue to black, and showy. Fruit is edible, but the plant is poisonous.
