Breeding and Selection of Rice Cultivars Adapted to Florida

Situation or issue identification: All current Florida cultivars are bred in mid-South states.

Rationale for research support resources: Our environment is different than other areas and we may find genotypes more well suited to our locale.

Measurable or potential impact in terms of social, economic, and/or environmental factors resulting from expenditure of research support funds: Effect would be measured by how well farmers like and grow the varieties.

Collaborating organizations/agencies and teaching/research/extension partnerships: USDA/ARS and the Florida Rice Council.
